May 26, 2016 - August 18, 2023
It is with great sadness that the Oakpointe family announces the passing of our beautiful boy River.
On July 21, 2023 River sustained a life threatining break to his P1, shattering it into dozens of pieces. He was rushed to Piedmont Equine where his team of vets came up with a plan to try and salvage the break. After a nearly 5 hour surgery, River stood and was bearing weight.
Over the next three weeks he had shown great signs of improvement, but on Monday August 14, he started to be non-weight bearing and his team started to get concerned.
The choice was made on Friday, August 18, to put him back under and see what was occurring inside his cast, because radiographs were not showing the entire picture.
Unfortunately, we received devastating news that a section of the bone had come through the skin and was not viable.
River was laid to rest under anesthesia as we knew he wasn't in pain and didn't want to wake him for our own selfish reasons of saying goodbye.
River was part of our family. He was so much more then "just a breeding" stallion. For 7 years of his life, he was the 6th sibling. He was the bareback and goof off buddy, he loved jumping derby courses with Heidi and running all over the farm with the kids, over dirt piles, through water and anywhere they wanted to adventure for the day. He was Emily's movie buddy, my confidant, and the one animal who just know how to make your day better.
His stall will remain empty indefinitely. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill for sure. His stall will have to be earned by a very special animal. We will miss hearing him call for his ladies, and demanding his meals first. I will miss the sunsets on the farm with him standing in the background.
I want to thank everyone involved with River. Rick and Judi Daniels for never questioning on whether or not to try whatever it took to save him. Justin Davis and Brent Yearwood for dropping your entire day to bring River home so he could spend eternity watching his babies grow up in the fields. All our friends and family who cried with us when we lost him. The entire Piedmont Equine team who spent nearly a month giving everything they had to save him. We couldn't have asked for a more talented and loving team.
Last but not least, our veterinarian and dear friend, Dr Chandler Wood. When River died, we know you lost a piece of your heart. You unselfishly always put him first and your heart knew when we must let him go. We will never be able to thank you for what you gave to him, and being there to send him off to a place where all good horses go.
Run free beautiful boy- your are missed and forever loved
January 16, 1953- July 9, 2023
On Sunday July 9, 2023, we lost one of the best horseman we have ever known. Pierre was a unique and gifted man. He was able to teach anyone who was willing to listen. He spent a lot of years teaching us to stop talking and hear what our horses were trying to tell us. He gave us new insight on how to read the animal, how to find a better way. He once said, "The day I stop learning something new is the day I will hang up my helmet." He strived daily to educate himself on any aspect of the equines he loved so much.
He was an honored horseman in both Canada and the United States and was a rider, teacher, equine sports commentator, Bemer representative, father, husband , brother and friend.
As he grew older he chose to groom for some of the upcoming talents in the country, so he could influence the next generation of equestrians with his knowledge. Our own Niko Goyette was one of those lucky young professionals.
I knew Pierre for 28 years of my adult life. He helped me raise my older two children and our son, Jean Odilon Belanger. He was my biggest cheerleader and helped me dream of one day building Oakpointe Equine, LLC.
In May of 2023, he was able to come see the farm, see all of 2023's babies and attend our sons wedding.
He will forever be in our hearts.
